The Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH) DAISY Award program began in January 2021.
BMH is pleased to celebrate its third deserving Honoree, Ashley Adkins, LPN. Ashley was named the May 2022 DAISY Award Honoree at an employee awards program held at Boone Memorial Hospital.
“It’s such a wonderful feeling knowing that all of your hard work and dedication is appreciated and not going unnoticed in a time when all nurses are feeling overwhelmed,” said Ashley.
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune SYstem) Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide. The DAISY Foundation was formed in November 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who passed away at the age of 33 from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura). Patrick’s family was profoundly touched by the kind and compassionate care provided by the nursing staff during his hospitalization. In Patrick’s memory, the family wanted to express their gratitude for the gift nurses share with patients and families every day, just as they had experienced.
“The DAISY Award celebrates nurses in healthcare facilities all around the world,” said BMH Chief Nursing Officer, Terri Castle, BSN. “It’s a wonderful way to recognize our BMH Nurses and to ensure they know how deserving and respected they are for their skill, work ethic, and care they provide to our patients.”

BMH DAISY Award Selection Committee Chair and Director of Clinical Education and Employee Wellness, Ladie Viars, RN, explains the award criteria.
“The DAISY Award celebrates all that’s right in nursing. Any RN, LPN, or APRN is eligible to receive The DAISY Award. The winner, known as the Honoree, can be any nurse leader who impacts patient care directly including supervisors, managers, educators, or nurses who specialize in case management, informatics, or patient flow. We give two awards annually and accept nominations year-round,” Viars explains.
Ashley works at the BMH Family Medical Center (FMC) with Chad Adkins, DO, FMC Medical Director and West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine. He commends her efforts.
“Ashley is very dedicated to her profession and her dedication is evident in both the personal and clinical care of her patients,” said Dr. Adkins.
The BMH DAISY Award Committee established the following criteria, which is used in the selection process:
D – DEDICATION
The nurse should demonstrate extraordinary clinical skills in the delivery of compassionate care.
A – ATTITUDE
The nurse should display a positive attitude, while demonstrating professionalism.
I – INSPIRATION
The nurse should inspire others to be passionate about their profession.
S – SELFLESSNESS
The nurse should display a sense of selflessness in the care they provide.
Y – YES WE CAN spirit
The nurse should have a YES WE CAN attitude and shed a positive light in all situations.
“Ashley exemplifies that of a nurse who lives by this criterion. She is very deserving,” said BMH Outpatient Clinical Supervisor, Debbie Martin, RN. “She is an extremely hard worker, humble, and truly cares deeply about each and every patient.”

Ashley shows the most care for all her patients. I’ve seen so many times where patients are excited to see her because her personality brings them joy. Even if they’re sick, she can make them laugh and bring a little brightness to their day. Ashley will do extreme research for a patient who doesn’t understand their diagnosis or medicines. She makes sure they understand in length exactly what’s going on and the steps to take. She takes time out of her day to call patients and check on them after their visit to make sure all their needs were met. She is also an amazing teacher to other nurses, medical assistants, and students. Students enjoy being with her for clinicals because she makes their time at BMH fun and very educational. All the staff here looks up to Ashley and goes to her for their needs because of how knowledgeable she is. She is the true definition of an amazing nurse.

Ashley makes sure all nurses at the BMH Family Medical Center (FMC) are taken care of and appreciated. She is our voice of fairness. She doesn’t care to speak up and stand up for her patients when they need her.

Ashley is one of the hardest working nurses I know. She is very dedicated to her job and her patients. She always has a positive attitude and a GO GET IT ATTITUDE! I really look up to her.

Ashley is a very compassionate nurse. She has experienced losing loved ones in the past and when a patient comes in with the same experience, she relates to them and comforts them. She also makes sure patients are taken care of when they are grieving.
