Boone Memorial Health (BMH) presented a check to the American Heart Association (AHA) on Thursday, March 16, 2023, following the conclusion of a company-wide employee fundraiser that launched last month in celebration of American Heart Month.

The fundraiser was held in conjunction with Mingo County High School student Hillary Gore, West Virginia’s first national Youth Ambassador for the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge. Hillary is a survivor, having suffered a stroke at birth, which left her partially paralyzed on one side. As a Youth Heart Ambassador, Hillary is a voice for the AHA’s in-school initiatives, both locally and nationally, to encourage children to establish healthy habits.

To celebrate Hillary’s commitment and resilience, BMH employees quickly jumped on board to support Hillary and her platform through a friendly inter-departmental fundraising competition.

Hospital employees overwhelmingly exceeded expectations, more than tripling their initial goal of $2,500, to raise just under $8,500. To recognize their effort and generosity, BMH matched the employee donations dollar-for-dollar, bringing the total to nearly $17,000.

Boone Memorial Health CEO Virgil Underwood commended employees, saying, “The immense success of this AHA fundraiser illustrates the shared commitment of the entire BMH Family to improve the overall health of the communities we serve. BMH is proud to double their contribution toward the important goals that Hillary and the American heart Association are working to achieve.”

“We are constantly amazed at the generous nature of Hillary Gore, our state’s first ever Youth Heart Ambassador,” said Michelle Loehr, Executive Director for the American Heart Association. “And to see Boone Memorial Health step up to help her achieve her goals of helping fellow West Virginians by supporting our mission just reinforces the fact when a community comes together to do good, everyone wins!”

The winning departments in the BMH fundraising contest, based on total dollars raised, were:

  • 1st Place: Radiology: $3,545
  • 2nd Place: Medical Records/Referrals: $1,627
  • 3rd Place: Inpatient Pharmacy: $1,425
