Brighter Futures

Brighter Futures is a Substance and Mental Health Treatment Program operated by Boone Memorial Health. We care for patients working to recover from substance use disorders.

The program was made possible via a grant award from the State Opioid Response (SOR) Grant SAMHSA Funding Opportunity, a community innovation for treatment access and retention program. In addition, the Boone Memorial Health Board of Directors earmarked additional funding to further develop and strengthen the initiative.

Today, BMH Brighter Futures is reshaping the lives of so many… one patient at a time.

Watch and listen to stories from a few Brighter Futures patients.

“What I’m most proud of is the amount of people we’ve been able to help. From patients getting their kids back, getting their licenses, their GEDs, or going to school, we’ve been able to reach out and stabilize families who have been devasted by addiction.” – Richard Knapp, MD, Brighter Futures Medical Director and Family Medicine Physician

BMH Mobile Recovery Clinic

Transportation is one of the biggest barriers for people seeking treatment for addiction. Boone Memorial Health removed that barrier in 2024 by taking its Brighter Futures Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Treatment Program on the road, giving patients the opportunity to seek care closer to where they live.

The BMH Brighter Futures Mobile Recovery Clinic is the first of its kind in West Virginia to offer the full scope of its addiction recovery services in a mobile environment.

The BMH Brighter Futures Mobile Recovery Clinic travels to locations in Wharton, Orgas, and Jeffrey every week, welcoming patients by appointment or on a walk-in basis. The Mobile Recovery Clinic schedule is posted below.

About Medication Assisted Treatment

“I believe that Brighter Futures offers a five-star Medication Assisted Treatment program. It’s because we provide comprehensive treatment. Not only do we take care of active addiction, we also work to take care of the patient’s needs from all sides.” – Heather Robinson, MPAS, PA-C

Brighter Futures has a goal of helping an individual go from active addiction to achieving long-term sobriety and overall well-being. One of the core components of our program is Medication Assisted Treatment, often referred to as MAT.

Medication Assisted Treatment involves using FDA-approved medications, alongside counseling and behavioral therapies, to treat substance use disorders. It helps manage cravings and withdrawal symptoms, supporting individuals in their recovery from addiction.

Medications we prescribe under the program include Suboxone®, Sublocade®, Brixadi®, and Vivitrol®.

Once a patient is evaluated and establishes care with Brighter Futures, the providers from our medical team typically see the patient weekly to ensure that they are tolerating the prescribed medication, and that they are able to abstain from using illegal drugs. As the patient progresses through the program, the patient advances to seeing the provider every two weeks, and eventually, once a month.

As a supplement to Medication Assisted Treatment and behavioral counseling, the Brighter Futures Program offers case management and other services to address social determinant issues, such as transportation, having a driver’s license, housing, education, and career placement.

Boone County Quick Response Team

To further help address the serious opioid issues in our service area, Boone Memorial Health spearheaded establishment of, and today works in collaboration with, the Boone County Quick Response Team (QRT). The QRT is an integrated team of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, faith leaders, law enforcement officers, and recovery resource advocates dedicated to serving individuals struggling with addiction in Boone County, West Virginia, and surrounding communities.

The mission of the Quick Response Team is to spread awareness, educate, and advocate with an aim of decreasing overdoses and overdose deaths. The Quick Response Team is trained to respond to overdose victims within 72 hours following a life-threatening drug overdose. The team will also see individuals who are battling addiction and have been referred by friends or family. To contact the Quick Response Team, call 866.800.0778.
