This prestigious workplace designation makes BMH the only Great Place To Work®‑Certified Health System in West Virginia.

Boone Memorial Health (BMH) has been Certified™ by Great Place To Work® – the global authority on workplace culture, employee experience, and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver market-leading revenue, employee retention, and increased innovation. The Trust Index™ survey conducted at BMH shows that 78 percent of employees say BMH is a great place to work, and 92 percent are proud of BMH’s impact on the community, scores that far exceed national benchmarks.

“Our people are the heartbeat of Boone Memorial Health,” said BMH President and CEO Virgil Underwood. “This Certification is more than a badge; it’s proof that the culture created by our employees is among the best in the nation. When 78 percent of our team says BMH is a great place to work, they’re telling current and future patients that compassionate, high-quality care starts with a workplace grounded in trust and respect.”

The recognition was announced during BMH’s annual Employee Appreciation Day today, when hundreds of staff members gathered for food, fellowship, and awards. During the event, Madison City Councilman Victor Farmer read a proclamation from Mayor James “Buddy” Hudson designating the day as “Boone Memorial Health Day” in Madison. Mayor Hudson’s proclamation called upon all citizens to congratulate Boone Memorial Health on this prestigious national recognition and to express their deepest gratitude to its 550‑plus employees for their steadfast commitment to caring for the community.

“Because this honor is based entirely on anonymous employee feedback, it’s the most authentic measure of our culture,” said BMH Chief Human Resources Officer Crystal Smarr. “That candid input tells us not only what we’re doing well but also where we must improve, and we’re committed to listening, learning, and acting on the feedback we received.”

“Great Place To Work Certification is a highly coveted achievement that requires consistent and intentional dedication to the overall employee experience,” said Sarah Lewis-Kulin, the Vice President of Global Recognition at Great Place To Work. She emphasized that Certification is the sole official recognition earned by the real-time feedback of employees regarding their company culture. “By successfully earning this recognition, it is evident that Boone Memorial Health stands out as one of the top companies to work for, providing a great workplace environment for its employees.”

The Certification aligns with the goals established in BMH’s 2030 Strategic Plan, which commits the organization to holistic employee wellbeing, professional growth, and job satisfaction in every department.

BMH Chief Operating Officer Angie Christian added, “When employees feel valued and equipped, they deliver exceptional care. This Certification underscores that connection: a thriving workforce drives safer processes, quicker innovation, and better patient outcomes. BMH will continue investing in the tools, training, and supportive environment our teams need to keep raising the bar for rural healthcare.”

The Great Place To Work Certification is valid for 12 months and makes BMH the only health system or hospital in West Virginia to hold this credential for 2025–2026.
