BMH remains West Virginia’s only Great Place To Work-Certified™ health system

MADISON, W.Va. – Boone Memorial Health (BMH) is proud to be Certified™ by Great Place To Work® for the second year in a row, and remains the only Great Place To Work-Certified™ health system in West Virginia. The prestigious award is based entirely on anonymous survey responses from current employees about their experience working at BMH. This year, 77 percent of employees said it is a great place to work, 20 points higher than the average U.S. company.

“To earn this Certification a second year in a row, and to remain the only health system in West Virginia to hold it, tells me our culture isn’t a moment; it’s who we are,” said BMH President and CEO Virgil Underwood. “We’ve grown to more than 600 team members, and as we’ve grown, our people have kept trust, respect, and a shared sense of purpose at the center of everything we do. When our employees feel valued, our patients feel it too. That is what Bringing Medicine Home is all about.”

Great Place To Work® is the global authority on workplace culture, employee experience, and the leadership behaviors proven to deliver market-leading revenue, employee retention, and increased innovation.

Employees also rated BMH highly across the behaviors measured by the Great Place To Work Trust Index™ survey, with 89 percent saying they are given the resources and equipment to do their jobs and 89 percent saying they feel good about the ways BMH contributes to the community.

BMH marked the renewed Certification with a celebration today at the hospital’s main campus entrance, where the organization’s leadership team recognized employees and staff gathered for lunch and fellowship.

“What makes this recognition so meaningful is that it comes straight from our team, in their own words and on their own terms,” said BMH Chief Human Resources Officer Crystal Smarr. “Earning it again, as our team continues to grow, tells us our culture is holding strong even as we welcome new faces. We don’t take that for granted. We read every piece of feedback we receive and use it to keep making BMH a place where people want to build a career.”

“Great Place To Work Certification is a highly coveted achievement that requires consistent and intentional dedication to the overall employee experience,” said Sarah Lewis-Kulin, Vice President of Global Recognition at Great Place To Work. She emphasized that Certification is the sole official recognition earned by the real-time feedback of employees regarding their company culture.

“By successfully earning this recognition, it is evident that Boone Memorial Health stands out as one of the top companies to work for, providing a great workplace environment for its employees.”

“A strong workplace and strong patient care are the same story told from two sides,” said BMH Chief Operating Officer Angie Christian. “The trust our employees describe in this survey is the same trust our patients feel at the bedside. It is no accident that the teams who made BMH a great place to work are the same teams who have earned six consecutive years of five-star patient experience ratings. As a rural health system, keeping experienced, engaged people close to home is one of the most important things we can do for our community.” According to Great Place To Work research, job seekers are 4.5 times more likely to find a great boss at a Certified great workplace. Additionally, employees at Certified workplaces are 93 percent more likely to look forward to coming to work, and are twice as likely to be paid fairly, earn a fair share of the company’s profits, and have a fair chance at promotion.
