The BMH Cancer & Infusion Center expected to open January 2026.
Boone Memorial Health (BMH) has officially announced a groundbreaking partnership with the WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) and WVU Medicine, marking a significant step forward in expanding cancer care access for Southern West Virginia.
During a special event at BMH on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, leaders from both health systems gathered to sign a partnership agreement that formally establishes the forthcoming BMH Cancer & Infusion Center as a clinical affiliate of the WVU Cancer Institute. The collaboration aims to bring world-class oncology services to Boone County and surrounding areas, ensuring patients can receive cutting-edge cancer treatment closer to home.
The BMH Cancer Center, which is currently in the design phase and expected to open to patients in January 2026, will offer a comprehensive range of oncology services, including medical oncology, chemotherapy infusion, and related pharmacy services. The new facility will be the first cancer center in Boone County’s history.
“Our partnership with WVU Cancer Institute is a testament to our commitment to expanding access to high-quality care for our community,” said Virgil Underwood, President and CEO of Boone Memorial Health. “Cancer treatment should not come with the added burden of traveling long distances. By working with WVU Medicine, we are bringing top-tier oncology care right here to Boone County, providing our patients with the expertise and resources they deserve.”
BMH’s cancer care initiative is being supported by a $1.5 million award from Governor Jim Justice’s Rural Hospital Grant Program, which was passed by the West Virginia Legislature during the October 2024 Special Session. These funds will help make advanced cancer care a reality for the Coalfields, ensuring that rural patients have access to the latest treatments and therapies.
“As we move forward with the development of the BMH Cancer Center, our partnership with WVU Cancer Institute will be instrumental in delivering the highest level of cancer care to our region,” said Angie Christian, Chief Operating Officer of BMH. “This collaboration means our patients will benefit from the latest innovations in oncology, expert providers, and a comprehensive support system—all close to home.”
The event featured remarks from Albert Wright, President and CEO of WVU Health System, and Dr. Hannah Hazard-Jenkins, Executive Chair and Director of the WVU Cancer Institute, both of whom emphasized WVUCI’s mission to expand cancer care access across West Virginia.
Through this partnership, BMH and WVU Cancer Institute are working together to ensure that residents of Southern West Virginia have access to the same high-quality oncology care available in larger cities, without the need to travel far from home.
