Boone Memorial Hospital holds Drive-Through Thanksgiving Dinner
Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH) hosted a Drive-Through Thanksgiving Dinner on Monday, November 22nd. The event was held at the former Magic Mart Parking Lot in Danville, WV (Boone County). While the event was scheduled to begin at 11am, people began lining up at 10am.
"The turn-out was amazing," said Boone Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Underwood. "We began with two lines of vehicles, which quickly turned to five. We started an hour early and worked an hour past closing to ensure every car in line was served. We gave away 1,700 meals in four hours."
The complimentary, ready-to-eat, hot meal consisted of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce and rolls. Community members simply pulled in, drove through, and took a meal. Walk-up was also available for those without transportation.
The meal was prepared by the BMH Dietary Department. "Our Dietary Department did a wonderful job," said Underwood. "To have prepared a full thanksgiving dinner, while maintaining the hospital cafeteria and patient meals, was absolutely extraordinary. It was a team effort. Over 40 volunteers from the hospital, auxiliary, community, Town of Danville and Boone County Sheriff's Department spent their day setting up, directing traffic, stuffing goody bags, and preparing and delivering meals. It was a remarkable effort."
"We know the past few years have been especially difficult. We wanted to do something to give back; to give thanks to those who work hard to provide for their families daily. We hope this dinner helped bring people together and celebrate those things we are all thankful for...family and community," Underwood concluded.
