Mental health and physical health are deeply interconnected, influencing each other in multiple ways. A healthy mental state can enhance physical well-being, while mental health issues can contribute to physical health problems. Conversely, chronic physical conditions can lead to mental health challenges, creating a complex interplay that underscores the importance of addressing both aspects of health in a holistic manner.
In years past, too many people have neglected addressing their mental health needs for fear of being judged or discriminated against if they seek help. At Boone Memorial Health, we are working to break that stigma.
BMH Psychiatrist, Melissa Moody, MD, wants people to know that the brain is an organ just like any other part of the body, just like the heart, lungs, or kidneys. When a person’s brain gets sick, it affects how people feel, how they think, and even sometimes what they see and hear. If someone had heart disease, they would not be judged for seeking treatment to help them get well. Having a mental illness is the same, and seeking treatment to become well or stay well is the same idea.
